After the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, he showed himself to be alive through many undeniable actions (Acts 1:3-4). He was with the disciples for 40 days and was even seen by over 500 people at one time (1 Corinthians 15:6). Jesus was ascending to the Father, but he had made a promise to his disciples. Today, that promise of Holy Spirit Baptism applies to all believers. Jesus promised power, but they would have to wait for it. With this promise, the Spirit would give them the power to be witnesses.
Are you being a witness through your words and deeds?
We have to understand the excitement the disciples had after being in contact with the resurrected Lord for 40 days. They must have been busting at the seams to go spread the word about him being alive. Here is what confuses us. Jesus’ final instruction for them is to wait. Wait?! When we get Good News, we want to tell somebody, we don’t want to wait.
Jesus tells them they are not fully equipped for the task at hand. They need power. They need His power. They will have to wait for it. On the Day of Pentecost that power came. These uneducated men took the Gospel to the ends of the earth. The Holy Spirit gives gifts and does many things for us, but we too are empowered to be His witnesses. So, I ask you, what are you waiting for?
