ETOWAH COUNTY, Ala. — Sheriff Jonathon Horton recently welcomed a group of young student leaders to the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office as part of a hands-on civic learning experience designed to introduce students to local government operations.

The visit was one stop on a broader tour of government facilities, where students gained firsthand insight into civics and the roles various agencies play within the community. The program provided participants with a closer look at public service, leadership, and the day-to-day responsibilities of local government officials.

“It’s a joy to see these students taking an interest in how the real world works,” Sheriff Horton said. “Experiences like this will hopefully help guide them toward making good decisions and finding success in life.”

The initiative reflects a growing emphasis on youth engagement and civic education, helping students better understand how public institutions operate and how they can contribute positively to their communities.

Officials with the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of investing in young leaders, noting that opportunities like these allow law enforcement to serve not only as protectors, but also as mentors and role models.

“At the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office, we recognize the importance of investing in our youth and welcome every opportunity to serve as role models, resources, and advocates for the next generation,” the agency shared.

The civic learning program was sponsored by the Etowah Chamber, whose support helped make the educational experience possible.

A special thank you was extended to the Etowah Chamber for facilitating the initiative and providing students with meaningful exposure to local government functions.
