APRIL 2026

Spring Bite Heats Up Across the “Crappie Capital of the World”

The Weiss Lake Insider | TWLN Lake News | The Weekly Ledger News

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ala. — April has arrived, and with it comes one of the most exciting times of the year on Weiss Lake. As water temperatures rise and daylight stretches longer, anglers are seeing a noticeable increase in activity across the lake, signaling that the spring fishing season is in full swing.

From crappie moving shallow for the spawn to bass aggressively feeding, Weiss Lake is living up to its reputation as one of Alabama’s top fishing destinations.

Crappie: The Main Attraction

April places Weiss Lake right in the heart of crappie season—and the bite is on.

Crappie are currently moving into shallow water areas, especially around:

  • Brush piles

  • Docks

  • Creek channels

  • Flooded vegetation

Anglers are finding success using live minnows and jigs, particularly when fishing under a float or casting into structure. Longlining in creeks and coves continues to produce solid results as well.

Many fishermen are reporting quality-sized slabs, making this one of the best times of year to fill the cooler.

Bass: Spawning Season Underway

Largemouth bass are actively transitioning through pre-spawn into full spawn, making April a prime month for bass anglers.

Early in the month, bass can be found staging near:

  • Points

  • Drop-offs

  • Docks

As the month progresses, expect bass to move shallow into:

  • Grassy banks

  • Protected coves

  • Bedding areas

Top-performing baits include:

  • Spinnerbaits

  • Soft plastics

  • Jigs

  • Crankbaits

With fish more aggressive this time of year, anglers have a great opportunity to land some impressive catches.

Conditions & Lake Outlook

As temperatures continue to warm, both water and fish activity levels are rising.

This leads to:

  • Increased feeding behavior

  • Better shallow-water action

  • Strong early morning and late afternoon bites

Spring conditions can change quickly, so anglers should stay flexible and adjust techniques as needed.

Lake Safety Reminder

Weiss Lake is known for its shallow areas and submerged structure, which can pose hazards for boaters unfamiliar with the lake.

Boaters are encouraged to:

  • Stay within marked channels when possible

  • Use caution in low water areas

  • Remain aware of changing conditions

Final Cast

April is simply one of the best months of the year to be on Weiss Lake. Whether you’re chasing crappie or targeting bass, the spring bite is delivering—and local anglers are already reaping the rewards.

So grab your gear, hit the water, and enjoy everything Weiss Lake has to offer this month.

Spring Patterns Heating Up: March Fishing on Weiss Lake

As March unfolds across Weiss Lake, anglers can expect one of the most dynamic seasonal transitions of the year. Warming water temperatures begin to trigger pre-spawn and spawning activity, creating excellent opportunities for both crappie and bass fishermen.

Crappie Fishing in March

March marks a strong pre-spawn-to-spawn transition for crappie. As water temperatures climb into the low-to-mid 50s, crappie move away from deeper creek channels and begin staging in shallower bays and pockets.

Fish are commonly found holding in 4 to 10 feet of water, particularly in protected areas where the water warms more quickly. Sunny days often draw crappie even shallower as they feed more aggressively, while colder or windy conditions may push them slightly deeper into the 8 to 10-foot range.

Several techniques prove highly effective this time of year. Longlining allows anglers to cover water efficiently, while vertical jigging and fishing jigs under a float remain reliable approaches for targeting suspended fish.

In terms of lure selection, Bobby Garland Slab Slayers and Baby Shads continue to be productive, especially in natural color patterns such as gray and white. Live minnows also remain a dependable option, particularly during slower bite windows.

Bass Fishing in March

Bass fishing also begins to heat up as fish transition from deep wintering areas toward shallower, warmer zones. During March, bass frequently position along riprap, rocky banks, gravel shorelines, and secondary points.

Reaction-style presentations are particularly effective for covering water and locating active fish. Lipless crankbaits, chatterbaits, and spinnerbaits are all strong producers during this transition period. Chatterbaits and shallow-running crankbaits, in particular, perform well as water temperatures hover in the 50s.

As bass prepare for the spawn, flipping or pitching jigs around shallow cover — especially stumps — can also yield solid results.

Key Conditions to Watch

Water temperatures typically begin the month in the low 50s but can rise quickly with warming trends. Even small increases can trigger noticeable shifts in fish behavior and feeding activity.

Wind can also play a major role. Wind-blown points often concentrate baitfish, which in turn attract both crappie and bass. Targeting these areas can be especially productive.

Regulations and Reminders

Anglers are reminded that an Alabama fishing license is required when fishing Weiss Lake. Crappie regulations include a 10-inch minimum size limit.

Additionally, Weiss Lake is known for fluctuating water levels. Rapid changes can impact fish positioning, sometimes pushing schools into calmer, deeper pockets until conditions stabilize.

For many fishermen, March represents one of the most exciting months on Weiss Lake, offering the chance to capitalize on active fish and shifting seasonal patterns.
