Verizon Says Outage Resolved, Promises Compensation for Impacted Customers

TWLN Staff Writer | The Weekly Ledger News | Nationwide News

Verizon announced Wednesday night that it has resolved a widespread service outage that disrupted wireless voice and data services for customers across the United States and said it will provide compensation to those affected.

“The outage has been resolved,” Verizon said in a statement. “If customers are still experiencing issues, we encourage them to restart their devices to reconnect to the network.”

The telecommunications company first acknowledged the outage around noon Wednesday after customers began reporting widespread service problems. Verizon said its engineers were actively working to identify and resolve the issue, apologizing for the inconvenience and emphasizing the importance of reliable connectivity.

According to Downdetector, reports of Verizon service disruptions peaked at approximately 180,000 users at 12:42 p.m. Eastern Time. By 10:01 p.m., reports had dropped to about 7,500 users, indicating service restoration was underway.

Later in the afternoon, Verizon released an updated statement reaffirming its commitment to resolving the issue. “Our teams remain fully deployed and focused on restoring service as quickly as possible,” the company said.

Verizon subsequently announced it would compensate customers impacted by the outage. “Today, we let many of our customers down, and for that we are truly sorry,” the company said in a post from its Verizon News account. “We will make this right — for any customer affected, we will provide account credits and share updates soon.”

Many users reported their phones entering SOS mode or losing signal entirely. Downdetector data showed that 59% of reports cited mobile phone failures, while 34% involved loss of signal. The outage appeared to most heavily affect major metropolitan areas, including New York City, Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, and Dallas.

While some users also reported issues with AT&T and T-Mobile, both carriers stated their networks were operating normally. T-Mobile noted that customers may experience difficulty reaching Verizon users due to the outage.

Verizon has not disclosed the cause of the disruption. Jack Burbank, a senior member of the nonprofit Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, said outages of this scale can result from a variety of issues, including faulty configuration changes or problematic software updates.

Customers affected by the outage were still able to make calls and access the internet using Wi-Fi calling, if enabled. Verizon customers with compatible devices may also use satellite text messaging, though connections can be limited by environmental factors such as buildings or tree cover.

The outage marks another high-profile disruption in recent years, following previous nationwide service interruptions involving major telecommunications and technology providers.
