CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ala. — From national recognition for local law enforcement to new business growth and extreme summer heat, the past week brought several notable developments across Cherokee County and surrounding communities.
One of the week’s biggest stories came as the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office received the prestigious National Model School Resource Officer (SRO) Agency Award, recognizing the department’s commitment to school safety, student engagement, and excellence in its School Resource Officer program.
Continuing its emphasis on public safety, Cherokee County deputies and School Resource Officers also completed advanced training using the VirTra judgmental use-of-force simulator, allowing officers to sharpen their decision-making skills through realistic, scenario-based exercises designed to prepare them for critical incidents.
Economic growth was also in the spotlight as Jefferson’s at Weiss Lake officially celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Community leaders, local officials, and residents gathered to welcome the new waterfront restaurant, which is expected to become a popular dining destination for both locals and visitors.
Weather remained a major concern throughout the week as the National Weather Service issued a Heat Advisory for Cherokee County and much of northeast Alabama. Heat index values climbed to nearly 107 degrees, prompting officials to encourage residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and check on elderly neighbors and vulnerable family members.
Emergency responders were also kept busy over the weekend after two separate injury crashes occurred on Saturday, June 27. First responders from multiple agencies assisted at both scenes, with those involved receiving medical attention.
Elsewhere in northeast Alabama, the Etowah County Board of Education announced the selection of its new superintendent, while an Alexandria teenager tragically lost his life in a single-vehicle crash in Calhoun County. In another notable law enforcement story, an Oxford Police Department investigator was named the American Legion of Alabama’s Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, recognizing outstanding service and dedication to the profession.
Sports also generated excitement as two Centre youth baseball All-Star teams earned berths in the USSSA World Series.
At the state level, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced a $300,000 healthcare fraud settlement, while state officials continued efforts supporting Huntsville as the permanent home of U.S. Space Command. Consumers were also advised of a recall involving certain ready-to-eat pasta salad products distributed in Alabama because of undeclared allergens.
From public safety achievements and business growth to community celebrations and statewide developments, the week highlighted the many stories shaping Cherokee County and northeast Alabama as June comes to a close.
