BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Central Alabama is in for a major shift in weather over the next several days, beginning with the potential for strong thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight, followed by a blast of the coldest air we’ve seen so far this fall.

There is a Marginal Risk (level 1 out of 5) for severe thunderstorms across central Alabama this afternoon and evening. Damaging winds and hail are the main concern.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of central Alabama under a Marginal Risk (level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms today. Conditions will remain warm and unstable, and as storms develop and move across the area, some could become strong enough to produce wind gusts up to 60 mph or large hail. No tornadoes are expected at this time.

Partly sunny on Saturday with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs in the 70s to around 80.

The Marginal Risk that had been issued for Saturday has been removed, but showers will continue on and off through Sunday as the system slowly moves out.

Then, behind this round of rain, a cold front will sweep across the region bringing a sharp drop in temperatures. The incoming air mass is expected to be the coldest of the season so far, and much of the northern half of central Alabama will likely experience its first freeze Monday morning. Areas that don’t hit freezing Monday will almost certainly dip below 32° by early Tuesday morning, with lows in the 20s reaching as far south as Demopolis, Selma, Montgomery, Troy, and Eufaula.

Residents are encouraged to take precautions for cold-sensitive plants and outdoor pets over the weekend. Use the warmer hours between rain showers to cover or bring in plants, and ensure outdoor animals have adequate shelter and water ahead of the cold snap.

Stay tuned to The Weekly Ledger News and the National Weather Service for updates as this active weather pattern unfolds over the coming days.
