GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. — Longtime Guntersville resident Randy Jones was officially sworn in Friday morning as a member of the Tennessee Valley Authority Board of Directors during a ceremony held inside the historic Guntersville Dam.
The event drew a crowd of local leaders, community members, and TVA officials to the nearly 90-year-old facility, which stands as a symbol of progress and innovation in the Tennessee Valley.
“It’s truly an honor to welcome you here today to this historic and meaningful event,” said TVA President and Chief Executive Officer Don Moul. “The swearing-in of Randy Jones as a member of the Tennessee Valley Authority Board of Directors is a celebration of leadership, service, and the enduring mission of TVA.”
Jones, a Guntersville resident of 50 years, was nominated by the President of the United States and appeared before the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works in October. His nomination was confirmed by the Senate in December.
Jones brings decades of public service experience to the TVA board. He previously served 17 years on the Guntersville Electric Board, including six years as chairman, and currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Jacksonville State University. His extensive civic involvement also includes 48 years of service with the Albertville Rotary Club, as well as roles on the Alabama Certificate of Need Board and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Board.
Jones was among four new board members confirmed last year, alongside Mitch Graves and Jeff Hagood of Tennessee and Arthur Graham of Florida.
Joined by his wife, Debra Jones, he was sworn in using his family Bible dating back to 1960, inscribed to his mother, Mozelle Jones. Speaking over the steady hum of the dam, Jones reflected on the broader significance of the moment.
“This is not about me,” Jones said. “This is about the people who had a vision to transform this region and bring power to these seven states.”
Jones recalled the early days of TVA, noting that in 1935, original TVA board member David Lilienthal came to Guntersville to address concerns from local farmers and business owners about the construction of the dam and the new concept of public power.
“It worked,” Jones said. “The very next week, the citizens of Marshall County voted to say, ‘We are in’ on this great endeavor.”
The Tennessee Valley Authority was founded in 1933 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt and has since grown to become the largest public power provider in the nation, serving more than 10 million people across seven states.
Moul expressed confidence in Jones’ leadership and commitment to TVA’s mission.
“Randy brings a deep commitment to public service and a passion for advancing the prosperity of this region,” Moul said. “His leadership will help guide TVA as we continue to deliver reliable, affordable, and resilient energy while honoring the values that have defined TVA for more than ninety years.”
