TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A Tuscaloosa woman has been charged with multiple offenses after authorities say she provided false information to police following the accidental shooting of a juvenile during the filming of a TikTok video.
According to court records, Sanchessica Fields is charged with endangering the welfare of a child, giving a false name to law enforcement, obstructing governmental operations, and tampering with physical evidence in connection with the incident.
Tuscaloosa Police Department officers first interviewed Fields and her teenage son on January 5 at a local hospital, where the juvenile victim — the son’s girlfriend — was being treated for a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
During the initial interview, Fields reportedly told officers that she, her son, and the victim were inside a vehicle when the victim began yelling at a woman in another car while stopped at a traffic light. Fields claimed the other vehicle followed them, and that when both vehicles stopped, the victim exited and continued yelling before a single gunshot was heard. Realizing the victim had been shot, Fields said they transported her to the hospital.
Court records indicate Fields and her son stated they did not know the individuals in the other vehicle, though they believed the victim may have known the woman involved. Investigators later determined that Fields and her son provided a false address during this interview.
Police say the story changed during a second interview.
According to a deposition, Fields’ son later stated that the shooting occurred inside his bedroom, where he accidentally discharged the firearm while attempting to move it so his girlfriend could sit down. He told investigators that the victim allegedly suggested telling police a different version of events and said his mother removed the firearm from the residence and took it to a family member’s home to dispose of it.
However, investigators received a different account from the juvenile victim.
The victim told officers she was shot while her boyfriend was recording a video for TikTok. According to court records, she stated that he was waving a firearm while filming and disengaged the weapon’s safety before continuing to handle it. The firearm then discharged, causing her to fall to the ground.
The victim further told investigators she never instructed her boyfriend or his mother to provide false information regarding the incident.
At this time, Fields’ son has not been charged, though authorities say the accidental shooting remains under investigation.
