Shooting-Related Death Under Investigation in Cherokee County; Coroner Confirms Active Investigation

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ala. — Authorities in Cherokee County are actively investigating a shooting-related death that occurred early Tuesday morning, May 26, in the Woods Bend community.
According to initial reports, emergency responders were dispatched at approximately 5:30 a.m. after receiving a call reporting that a female had suffered a gunshot wound.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Mt. Wisner Fire Department, and Atrium Floyd EMS responded to the scene. Upon arrival, first responders immediately began lifesaving measures in an effort to save the victim.
Officials stated that a medical helicopter was requested; however, the aircraft was unable to respond due to weather conditions at the time.
Despite emergency efforts, the female victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office was then called to assist with the investigation.
Authorities have not released details regarding what led up to the shooting, and no additional information about the victim has been made public at this time.
In a statement released Tuesday, the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office confirmed it is actively investigating the death in coordination with local law enforcement.
According to the coroner’s office, the investigation remains in its early stages, and no additional information is being released at this time.
“We ask the community to please keep the families affected, as well as all first responders and law enforcement personnel involved, in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” the statement read.
