CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ala. — Cherokee County Coroner Paul McDonald has formally announced his candidacy for another term, officially qualifying with the Alabama Republican Party to seek reelection.

McDonald has served the citizens of Cherokee County since August 2016, beginning as Chief Deputy Coroner before being elected Coroner, a role he has held for the past six years. He said the opportunity to serve the community has been a privilege and that he remains committed to professionalism and compassion in the office.

“It has been an honor to serve the citizens of Cherokee County,” McDonald said, noting his efforts to approach every case with integrity, dignity, and respect for families during difficult times.

To further strengthen the operations of the Coroner’s Office, McDonald has earned both Diplomate and Fellow certifications through the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators — credentials he says reflect a commitment to continued education and national standards in medicolegal death investigation.

McDonald emphasized collaboration with multiple agencies as a key part of the job, saying Cherokee County deserves a coroner who works closely with law enforcement, emergency responders, medical professionals, and the judicial system to ensure accurate and timely investigations.

“I look forward to continuing to work alongside our law enforcement agencies, fire departments, dispatchers, EMS, and all first responders as we serve Cherokee County together,” he said.

McDonald also referenced his faith as a guiding influence in his service, expressing gratitude for “God’s guidance and strength” and praying for continued wisdom and compassion in the work ahead.

He concluded by asking residents for their continued trust and support as he seeks reelection.

“I would be truly honored to have your support and trust once again,” McDonald said.
