CENTRE, Ala. — A late-night standoff in Centre ended safely after deputies with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man who reportedly threatened law enforcement while claiming to be armed.
According to Sheriff Jeff Shaver, the incident began around 10:30 p.m. when deputies responded to assist the Centre Police Department on a call involving a man allegedly refusing to allow a woman to exit a vehicle. During initial investigation, officers determined the incident originated within the jurisdiction of the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and officers proceeded to a residence located at 210 Day Street in Centre in an attempt to make contact with the suspect. Upon encountering the man inside the home, the individual reportedly stated he had a firearm and threatened to use it against law enforcement. Deputies observed the suspect holding an object they initially believed to be a gun.
A brief standoff ensued. Deputies deployed less-lethal munitions, allowing them to safely take the suspect into custody. It was later determined that the object in the suspect’s hand was not a firearm.

The suspect, identified as Randell Gossett, was arrested and charged with Terroristic Threats 1st Degree and Resisting Arrest.
Sheriff Shaver expressed his appreciation to the Centre Police Department, Leesburg Police Department, and Cedar Bluff Police Department for their coordinated efforts in bringing the situation to a safe and peaceful resolution.
