FORT PAYNE, Ala. — DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden has officially qualified to run for re-election, filing paperwork Monday morning at the DeKalb County Courthouse surrounded by family members, deputies, staff, and supporters.

Welden, who is currently serving his second term as sheriff, is seeking a third term. He brings more than 25 years of law enforcement experience to the role and has led the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office for nearly eight years.
During his tenure, Welden says the Sheriff’s Office has significantly expanded its capabilities, including major crime investigations, the creation of an aviation unit, and strengthened efforts to protect children through the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) program. He also highlighted the launch of the Shining Star program, designed to better serve and protect citizens with special needs.
Welden points to increased staffing levels, enhanced drug enforcement initiatives, and continued improvements in training and equipment for deputies as key accomplishments under his leadership. According to the sheriff, DeKalb County has experienced record drug arrests, record child crime arrests, and strong case closure rates during his time in office.
In announcing his candidacy, Welden said his priorities remain focused on fighting crime, supporting law enforcement personnel, protecting children, and standing up for victims. He acknowledged that not every decision made in office is popular but emphasized that his accountability is to the citizens of DeKalb County, his conscience, and God.
A graduate of Sylvania High School, Welden and his wife, Audra, are raising their four children on a family farm in Sylvania. He said his commitment to the county remains unchanged and stressed the importance of integrity, transparency, faith, and results over politics.
Qualifying for the DeKalb County Sheriff’s race will continue ahead of the upcoming election.
