CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ala. — County Commission candidate Benjamin “Dee” Colbert is sharing the motivations behind his decision to run for public office, citing deep local roots, experience in government, and a commitment to transparency and improved services for residents.
Colbert said his choice to run is grounded in a lifelong connection to Cherokee County. He was born and raised here, raised his children here, and notes that multiple generations of his family have called the county home.
“First and foremost, I love this county,” Colbert said, emphasizing that his roots and relationships shape his desire to give back through public service.
Colbert has spent his entire adult life working in local government, which he says has given him a front-row view of how county operations function day to day. That experience, he stated, has shown him both “what works and what does not,” and where improvement is needed.
His stated goals include preserving successful programs, improving areas that can function better, and addressing problems that have gone uncorrected. As the campaign progresses, Colbert said he plans to openly discuss concerns he has observed and propose solutions.
One of his central priorities is expanding access to mental health services, an issue he believes has been “too long overlooked” in the county. He said increasing the availability of resources for those in need would be a key focus if elected.
Colbert also stressed the importance of transparency in local government, including ensuring that meeting minutes and public records are easy for citizens to obtain and review. Residents, he said, “deserve to clearly understand how their tax dollars are being spent.”
“These are just a few of the changes I hope to work toward on your behalf,” Colbert said, thanking voters for their time, consideration, and trust as the campaign moves forward.
