Centre Police Investigate a Report of an Individual Lying in a Ditch Sunday Evening

A 19-year-old located on Griffith Street behind Walmart was evaluated by EMS; no immediate threat to the public, authorities said

CENTRE, Ala. —Local authorities responded Sunday evening around 5:30 p.m. to a report of an individual lying in a ditch along Griffith Street, behind the Walmart shopping area.


Officers with the Centre Police Department arrived on scene and located a 19-year-old male in the ditch. Police said the individual was conscious, responsive, and able to communicate with officers. During their initial assessment, authorities determined the man was from LaFayette, Georgia.


According to police, the individual told officers he had lain down to rest and later stated he needed medical attention.


Emergency medical personnel with Atrium Floyd EMS responded and evaluated the individual at the scene. Officers also reported locating several bags nearby containing what was described as a suspicious substance. No arrests were made at the time.


Authorities emphasized that there was no immediate threat to the public and said the incident remains under investigation. Officials noted that charges could be filed at a later date if warranted.


Police thanked the citizen who reported the situation and encouraged residents to continue notifying authorities when they believe someone may need assistance.
