BREAKING: Childers Captured After Multi-Agency Manhunt Spanning Alabama and Georgia

FORT PAYNE, Ala. — After an intense, multi-day manhunt involving numerous law enforcement agencies across state lines, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the capture of Gary Jody Childers.

Childers was apprehended by authorities in Floyd County, Georgia, at approximately 9:15 p.m. Central Time following days of investigation, false leads, and extensive inter-agency coordination.

According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Childers faces multiple charges in Alabama, including Attempted Murder and Certain Persons Forbidden to Possess a Firearm, along with federal charges. He will remain in custody in Floyd County pending extradition to DeKalb County, Alabama.


Sheriff’s officials said the arrest followed a determined and cooperative effort among regional and federal agencies.


“We are grateful for the swift and coordinated response of our officers and partner agencies, whose teamwork ensured that this dangerous situation was brought to a safe conclusion,” said DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden.

“God Bless!” the sheriff added.


Authorities extended appreciation to the many agencies that assisted throughout the investigation and manhunt, including the Floyd County Police Department, Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, Etowah County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Gadsden Police Department, Jacksonville State University Center for Applied Forensics, Powell Police Department, Sylvania Police Department, Rainsville Police Department, Fort Payne Police Department, Collinsville Police Department, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the United States Marshals Service, and the United States Pardons and Paroles.


The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office emphasized its commitment to ensuring public safety and thanked the community for its patience and cooperation during the investigation.
