SPRING GARDEN, Ala. – An UTV accident at Indian Mountain ATV Park on Saturday night, September 6, left one male rider injured, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Chief Josh Summerford confirmed that a sheriff’s deputy, along with emergency personnel from Spring Garden Fire and Piedmont Rescue EMS, were dispatched to the park around 10:58 p.m. after receiving reports of an unconscious rider with a head injury.

A medical helicopter was requested, but due to poor weather conditions it was unable to respond. The victim was transported instead by Piedmont Rescue EMS to a hospital. Authorities stated the rider had regained consciousness before leaving the scene; however, his condition after transport has not been released.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office highlighted the importance of ATV and UTV safety in light of this accident and the deadly incident that occurred at the park over Labor Day weekend, where two people were killed and seven juveniles were injured after a Razor rolled over and struck a tree.

Sheriff Jeff Shaver stressed the need for safety precautions following the earlier tragedy over Labor Day Weekend. “We want everyone to enjoy their time outdoors, but accidents like this remind us how critical it is to follow safety guidelines. Helmets, proper gear, and responsible riding can make all the difference,” Shaver said during a press conference last Sunday.

This latest incident serves as another reminder of the risks associated with ATV and UTV use. Riders are urged to follow safety practices to help reduce the chance of serious injury.

ATV/UTV Safety Tips:

  • Always wear protective gear: helmet, goggles, gloves, long sleeves, long pants, and over-the-ankle boots.

  • Buckle up: use seat belts or harness systems.

  • Wear a helmet even with a roll cage—cages protect in rollovers, but helmets protect your head.

  • Keep arms and legs inside the vehicle during turns or rollovers.

  • Follow manufacturer limits for weight and passengers.

  • Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

  • Inspect your ATV and UTV before each ride: brakes, tires, steering, and fuel.

  • Familiarize yourself with the terrain before riding at high speeds.

  • Adjust speeds for terrain, weather, and visibility.

  • Respect property boundaries and stay on designated trails.

  • Approach slopes straight up or down, not sideways, to reduce rollover risk.

Authorities have not released further details about Saturday night’s crash.
