Cherokee Corners Shopping Plaza Evacuated on Thursday

(WEIS) CENTRE - Around 11 am Thursday, the Cherokee Corners Shopping Plaza, across from Walmart, in West Centre was evacuated due to an apparent gas leak.


Employees at World Finance began to smell gas and notified Central Dispatch (911). The Centre Fire Department responded and then called for all the adjacent buildings to be evacuated until the gas company could check the situation. The Cherokee Electric Cooperative turned off the service to the shopping plaza until all was cleared.


Around 11:21 am, the Fire Department notified Central Dispatch all was clear and that the employees and patrons of the nine different businesses were allowed to go back inside.
