Authorities have identified the victim as 10-year-old Katheryn Aliceanna Bigbee. Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown confirmed the young victim died from multiple stab wounds.

According to Piedmont Police Chief Nathan Johnson, officers were dispatched just before 11 p.m. on April 17 after receiving a report of a missing juvenile.

“When the parents were alerted by some noise they got up and noticed the child wasn’t in their bedroom, and that’s what led to the missing person’s call,” Chief Johnson said.

Once responding officers arrived at a residence on Porter Johnson Road, they were able to find the young girl inside the home with multiple stab wounds.

Despite lifesaving efforts at the scene, Bigbee was transported to a nearby hospital where she was later pronounced deceased.

A juvenile was taken into custody and charged with murder. Authorities have not released details regarding the relationship between the victim and the juvenile in custody. Due to the juvenile's age, authorities say only limited details can be released at this time. This is an ongoing investigation.

A Community in Mourning

Bigbee was a student at Piedmont Elementary School, where she is remembered as a bright light among her classmates and teachers.

“I couldn’t imagine coming home to news like that—it would just break my heart,” said Piedmont resident Adrian Fitten. “We’re praying for them.”

Local pastors and community leaders have organized prayer gatherings, while grief counselors have been made available to students and staff.

“Yesterday, there was grief counseling for school staff, and today for students,” said Pastor Jerry Stewart. “We’re continuing to pray for everyone impacted—students, teachers, first responders, and the family.”

Piedmont Elementary School shared a heartfelt message remembering Katheryn’s life and impact.

“She brought smiles, kindness, and joy each day,” the school shared. “Her memory will live on in all of us.”

The investigation remains active, and officials say no further details will be released at this time.

A GoFundMe has been established to assist the family as the community continues to stand beside them during this unimaginable loss. If you would like to donate, you can click or tap here.
