DOTHAN, Ala. —A routine traffic stop earlier this month led to a significant illegal alcohol seizure after law enforcement officers discovered more than 80 gallons of moonshine inside a vehicle traveling through southeast Alabama.

According to the Ozark Criminal Investigations Bureau, Ozark Police Officer Dylan Griffin conducted a traffic stop on Jan. 9 involving 61-year-old Learndis Hamilton. During the encounter, Officer Griffin reportedly observed several containers in plain view inside the vehicle, raising suspicion and prompting further investigation.

A subsequent search revealed approximately 81 gallons of illegally distilled moonshine, far exceeding the amount permitted under Alabama law. Authorities said Hamilton was traveling from Florida through Alabama, though his final destination was not disclosed.

Investigators believe the large quantity of moonshine indicated an intent to distribute the illegal alcohol, though officials noted it remains unclear where the alcohol was ultimately intended to be sold.

Hamilton was taken into custody at the scene and later booked into the Dale County Jail. The investigation has since been transferred to the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Board, which will oversee any additional enforcement actions related to the case.

Under Alabama law, possession of large quantities of unlicensed distilled spirits is a criminal offense, as the production and distribution of moonshine is strictly regulated due to public safety concerns and tax violations.

No additional details were immediately released, and the case remains under investigation.
