MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Governor Kay Ivey issued a state of emergency on Thursday as North Alabama prepares for an expected round of wintry and icy weather that could create hazardous travel conditions across the region.

The emergency proclamation applies to 19 northern Alabama counties, including Blount, Cherokee, Colbert, Cullman, DeKalb, Etowah, Fayette, Franklin, Jackson, Lamar, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Morgan, Walker, and Winston.

Governor Ivey said the declaration is intended to ensure the state is fully prepared ahead of the potential impacts, allowing emergency resources and personnel to be positioned in advance.

“I urge Alabamians to remain weather aware and use caution, particularly when traveling,” Ivey said, noting that icy road conditions could pose significant risks.

Alabama Emergency Management Agency Director Jeff Smitherman said state and local agencies have been actively preparing for the system. Crews have pre-staged equipment and resources, and local emergency management agencies are coordinating response plans to ensure a rapid reaction if conditions deteriorate.

Officials emphasized that residents should closely monitor weather updates, limit travel if conditions worsen, and follow guidance from local and state emergency management officials.

The Weekly Ledger News will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as new information becomes available.
