LEESBURG, Ala. — School districts across Alabama are closely monitoring developing winter weather conditions this weekend as administrators prepare for the possibility of school closures or delayed starts on Monday due to frigid temperatures and the threat of icy roadways.
With forecasts calling for very cold conditions and potential freezing precipitation, districts throughout the region are using the weekend to assess conditions and finalize decisions that prioritize student and staff safety.
Etowah County Schools Superintendent Alan Cosby said his district plans to closely track precipitation totals and road conditions on Sunday before announcing any changes to the school schedule.
“Being a county school system, we run roughly 100 buses a day, and many of our routes cover rural areas,” Cosby said. “We want to make sure conditions are safe and avoid any potential issues with ice on the roadways.”
Cosby also noted that school administrators took proactive steps ahead of the weekend to prepare for the cold temperatures. Principals across the district worked Friday to ensure buildings were ready, including adjustments to heating systems.
“We’ll also run our automated heating systems a little higher to help prevent any cold-weather related issues inside the buildings,” Cosby said.
The Weekly Ledger News also reached out to other area school district administrations. While responses had not been received as of publication time, district officials across the region are known to be closely monitoring weather developments throughout the weekend and will make decisions as conditions evolve.
