“Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom…”

In Genesis 12, Abram, later to be named Abraham, receives a command from God. Leave your country, your family, and your father’s house and go to a land I will show you. The details are very vague, but Abram packs his things and sets out for the unknown. (There are other promises given. Read Genesis 12:1-3). He packed up everything he had along with his nephew Lot and went to go find what God had in store for him.
One day God called you. You did not know where this Christian life would lead you, but nonetheless, you set out to find what God had planned. Abram’s journey, and ours, is a journey of faith. We are told that Abram came to a particular place and God said this is it. This land will one day belong to your descendants.
Abram pitched his tent, set up an altar, and called upon the name of the Lord. What’s interesting to me is the location. Abram was East of Bethel, which means the House of God. He was West of Hai, which is a picture of the world. Ai, meaning heap, was in the Valley of Achor, meaning trouble (Joshua 7 & 8). Do you see the contrast? He was right in the middle between God’s presence and the world. Each of us happens to be caught right there every day of our lives on earth.
We are warned to be in the world, but not of it (I John 2:15-16). This is not our home. We spend our earthly lives in the valley of trouble, but God is not very far away. All we have to do is seek Him. Abram built altars as he journeyed through the land of affliction. He called upon the name of the Lord, had faith, obeyed, and sacrificed to God. This tells me that even though we are in the world, we can walk with God if we choose.
He wants a relationship with you, and you get to choose moment by moment. Will you walk with God today?
