UPDATE: ( 01/06/2026 - 8:40 a.m.) Per ALEA the roadway Alabama Highway 68 near mile marker 17 in DeKalb County is back open.
DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. — A single-vehicle fire early Tuesday morning prompted the closure of both lanes of Alabama Highway 68 near mile marker 17 in DeKalb County.
The incident was reported at approximately 6:46 a.m. on January 6. Early reports indicate the vehicle involved is an 18-wheeler tractor-trailer that became fully engulfed.
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), both lanes of Alabama 68 remain blocked at this time, with the roadway closed to traffic for an undetermined period. The affected area is near Dawson’s Gap, west of Collinsville.
Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division responded to the scene and are currently monitoring conditions and assisting with traffic control.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area, seek alternate travel routes, and exercise caution if traveling nearby. Officials stated that updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
