Weiss Lake Fall Fishing Outlook: October and November Bring Changing Conditions and Opportunities for Anglers
TWLN Lake News Staff Writer | The Weekly Ledger News | Lake News
CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ala. — As autumn settles across Northeast Alabama, Weiss Lake continues to offer fishing opportunities for anglers targeting crappie, bass, catfish and other popular species. While fishing patterns throughout October and November are expected to remain relatively similar, gradually cooling water temperatures and seasonal changes in lake levels will influence where fish are located and how they respond to different fishing techniques.
Known as the "Crappie Capital of the World," Weiss Lake remains one of Alabama's most recognized fishing destinations. Its combination of shallow flats, submerged structures, creek channels and river ledges provides a variety of fishing opportunities throughout the fall season.
Crappie Fishing: A Popular Fall Attraction
Crappie fishing is expected to remain a major attraction during October and November as fish respond to cooler water temperatures and changing baitfish movements.
During October, anglers commonly find crappie around submerged brush piles, stumps, docks and creek channels. As temperatures continue to decline into November, fish may concentrate along deeper creek and river channels, particularly where underwater structures provide cover.
Fishing with live minnows, small jigs and trolling presentations can be productive during both months. Anglers may need to adjust their fishing depths and retrieve speeds as conditions change.
Areas near Yellow Creek, Bay Springs and the main Coosa River channel have historically provided opportunities for fall crappie fishing.
Bass Fishing: Cooler Weather Brings New Opportunities
Largemouth and spotted bass remain popular targets throughout the fall fishing season on Weiss Lake.
During October, bass frequently follow schools of shad into shallower areas, including creek mouths, points and shoreline cover. Spinnerbaits, crankbaits and other shad-imitating lures can be effective when fish are actively feeding.
As November approaches and water temperatures decline, bass may begin transitioning toward deeper structures and channel edges.
Anglers should pay attention to changing weather patterns, water clarity and baitfish activity when selecting fishing locations.
Catfish and Other Fishing Opportunities
Catfish can also provide fishing opportunities throughout October and November.
Channel and blue catfish may be found around deeper holes, river channels and areas where current carries food through the lake. Cut bait and other commonly used catfish baits can be effective, depending on water conditions.
Striped bass and white bass may also be encountered as they follow baitfish schools throughout the reservoir.
Although cooler weather can change feeding activity, anglers willing to adjust their techniques may continue finding success well into November.
Seasonal Lake Drawdown and Boating Safety
One of the most important considerations for fall fishing on Weiss Lake is the annual seasonal drawdown.
According to Alabama Power, the scheduled lowering period for Weiss Lake begins October 1 and continues through November 30. This process helps provide additional storage capacity for rainfall during the winter and spring months.
As water levels decline, submerged stumps, shallow flats, rocks and other underwater hazards may become more dangerous for boaters.
Anglers should exercise caution when navigating unfamiliar areas, particularly outside marked channels, and remain aware that changing weather and rainfall can affect lake elevations.
Boaters are encouraged to check current lake levels before launching and follow all applicable boating safety regulations.
What Anglers Can Expect Through November
Although October and November generally share similar fall fishing patterns, the transition between the two months can bring noticeable changes.
October often provides opportunities for anglers targeting fish around shallower cover and areas where baitfish are actively moving. By November, cooler water temperatures may encourage some species to gather around deeper structures and channel ledges.
Fishing success will depend on several factors, including water temperature, rainfall, water clarity, lake levels and changing weather conditions.
For those planning a fall fishing trip, flexibility will be important. Adjusting fishing depths, changing lure presentations and monitoring baitfish activity can help anglers adapt as the season progresses.
Enjoying Weiss Lake This Fall
Beyond fishing, Weiss Lake continues to serve as an important recreational destination for Cherokee County and surrounding communities.
With cooler temperatures and changing fall scenery, October and November can offer enjoyable opportunities for residents and visitors to spend time outdoors.
Whether fishing from a boat, casting from the shoreline or simply enjoying the beauty of the lake, visitors are encouraged to practice responsible recreation and help preserve the natural resources that make Weiss Lake a valued part of Northeast Alabama.
