An Alexander City textile mill is closing next month.
The Alabama Department of Commerce’s Warn List, which posts notifications of companies planning to close plants or layoff employees, states that Parkdale Mills will begin closing July 24, costing 113 people their jobs.
The closure marks the end of an era, as Parkdale Mills purchased the old Avondale Mills operation after it closed in 2006. The textile plant had been in operation for more than a century.
The Outlook reported that the company will help some employees relocate to its Leesburg operation in Cherokee County.
Billing itself as the “world’s leading manufacturer of spun yarns,” Parkdale Mills is the largest consumer of cotton in the U.S.
The company produces more than 8,000 tons of products weekly at 29 plants in the U.S., Mexico, and South America.
