Names Released in Fatal Cherokee County Crash on Alabama 273

LEESBURG, Ala. — Authorities have released the names of those involved in a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred Wednesday morning, April 1, in Cherokee County.
According to officials, the crash happened at approximately 7:15 a.m. on Alabama 273 near Cherokee County Road 48, about four miles north of Leesburg.
Marco Cortez-Gomez, 40, of Hanceville, was fatally injured in the collision. He was a passenger in a 2010 Nissan Altima that collided head-on with a 2024 Honda HR-V Sport. Cortez-Gomez was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the Honda, Katie G. Miller, 22, of Cedar Bluff, and the driver of the Nissan, Benjamin Cortez-Gomez, 44, of Hanceville, were both injured in the crash. They were transported to Atrium-Floyd Medical Center in Rome, Georgia, for treatment.
No additional details have been released at this time. Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
