Minutes from Cherokee County Board of Education September 8 Meeting

CENTRE, Ala. — The Cherokee County Board of Education convened its regular meeting on September 8, 2025. Below is a summary of key items discussed and actions taken during the session.


Meeting Highlights:


  • Call to Order, Opening Prayer, and Pledge of Allegiance

  • Public Comments: Community members were given the opportunity to address the Board.

  • Approval of Minutes and Agenda: The Board approved minutes from the August 12, 2025 meeting and adopted the current agenda.



Financial Reports:


  • The Board received the June 2025 Financial Report, including bank reconciliations, cash balances, and general ledger summaries.



Budget and Fund Approvals:


  • The FY26 Budget Hearing was held.

  • Renewals for participation in the Alabama Trust for Boards of Education (ATBE) Automobile Fund and General Liability/Errors & Omissions Liability Fund were approved.



Agreements and Services:


  • Contracts were approved with Lighthouse Counseling, LLC, Coosa Behavioral Services, LLC, Orientation and Mobility Services, and Sign Language Interpreting Services.



Student and Incident Reports:


  • The 2025 Student Incident Report was reviewed.



Bids Accepted:


  • Thompson Gas – Propane Gas (ITB# 25-10)

  • Waste Management – Garbage Service (ITB# 25-11)

  • Wittichen Supply – HVAC (ITB# 25-12)



Personnel Actions:


  • Retirements: Jennifer Sawyer (28 years) and Anita Formby (25 years) were recognized for their service.

  • Resignations and Contract Cancellations: Terry Gilbreath, Principal at Gaylesville School, resigned.

  • New Hires and Placements: Several certified and classified staff members were approved, including long-term substitutes and temporary contracts.

  • Supplemental Pay: Approved for various staff under state-funded grants.

  • Leaves of Absence, Substitute Renewals, New Substitutes, and Volunteers were also approved for the 2025-26 school year.



Professional Development and Job Postings:


  • The Board approved professional development initiatives and reviewed current job postings.



Superintendent’s Update and Other Business:


  • Superintendent provided updates on district activities and ongoing initiatives.



Next Meeting:


  • The next board meeting and second budget hearing is scheduled for Friday, September 12, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the New Central Office, 200 Armory Road, Centre, AL 35960.
