Officers were dispatched around 10:47 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10, to reports of two people shot in the 1600 block of Tuscaloosa Avenue Southwest. When officers arrived, they discovered a vehicle that had crashed into a tree in the front yard of a nearby residence.

Police identified the driver as 18-year-old Brandon McNeal Campbell, a senior at Pleasant Grove High School, who was found unresponsive inside the vehicle. A second occupant, identified only as a juvenile and also a student at Pleasant Grove High School, had been shot as well.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services transported both teens to a local hospital. Despite life-saving efforts, Campbell later died from his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The juvenile passenger remains hospitalized and is continuing to receive medical care.

According to investigators, preliminary information indicates the teens were inside the vehicle and had arranged to meet an unknown individual while in the 1600 block of Woodland Avenue. During the encounter, police say the suspect fired multiple shots into the vehicle.

Campbell was able to drive away from the scene but later lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree on Tuscaloosa Avenue, authorities said.

On Sunday, Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Dr. Walter Gonsoulin released a statement acknowledging the loss and confirming both victims were part of the Pleasant Grove High School community.

“I am deeply saddened that one of our Pleasant Grove High School seniors was killed in an act of violence, and that another senior from the school was seriously injured,” Gonsoulin said. “I am praying for the injured student’s recovery, as well as both families as they navigate this tragedy. We will do everything we can to support them and the Pleasant Grove High School family.”

District officials announced that members of the JEFCOED Cares Team will be on campus Monday morning to provide counseling and support services for students and staff.

Police confirmed no arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.
