BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - With FAFSA applications just opening up, many are looking at how they're going to finance the next step of their education.

Scholarships can also play a major role in paying for college, and some say the time to look is now.

While many focus on scholarships towards the end of their senior year of high school, the founder of Bold.org, a website that pairs you with scholarships based on an application, lots of scholarships and scholarship panels are looking for students across a much broader age range. Many are open to students at all years of high school.

When you’re looking at scholarships, it’s important to find a good fit. Look at what town you’re from, and what major you’re going for, lots are targeted to your background, your academic or extracurricular interests, says Dror Liebenthal, the founder and CEO of the Bold.org website.

By doing so, he says you’re increasing your chances of winning those scholarships.

Higher education is a big financial decision, which according to Liebenthal means you need to put lots of thought and research into it.

“Be thoughtful about that decision-making process and look at the holistic equation, not just which school seems to be the best on paper. Factoring that in and thinking, ‘what do I want to achieve?’ and which school is going to be the right short and long-term financial decision for me and my family,” Liebenthal says.

Liebenthal also says those about to start college are not the only ones eligible for scholarships. He says many exist for college transfers and even graduates who are looking to pay off student loans. (WBRC)
