Heat Indices are expected to soar into the 105-to-111-degree range over most of the Tennessee Valley this and Thursday afternoon. An excessive heat warning is in effect for Lauderdale, Colbert, and Franklin counties in AL for today with the rest of the area in a heat advisory for this afternoon through tomorrow. If you're going to be outdoors for an extended period, be sure you drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen, take breaks in the shade or inside, and dress in light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat-related illnesses to occur.


PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS


Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives/neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Heat indices could reach or exceed 105 degrees across portions of Central Alabama today.


Thursday through Tuesday.


Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across Central Alabama Thursday afternoon and evening. Threats include damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail. Locally heavy rainfall is also possible. This could produce flooding in low-lying or flood-prone areas.

Heat indices could reach or exceed 105 degrees across portions of Central Alabama on Thursday. Another period of heat indices approaching 105 degrees is possible Saturday through Monday.

Activation of storm spotters and emergency management may be needed Thursday.
