NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The police chief of Collinsville was arrested early Sunday morning in Nashville and charged with aggravated assault involving strangulation, according to authorities in Davidson County, Tennessee.
Police records indicate that Stephen Malone, Police Chief of the Collinsville Police Department, was taken into custody following an incident reported around 3 a.m. on February 1 at a residence on 12th Avenue South in Nashville.
According to an arrest affidavit, Malone was visiting a woman with whom he is in a dating relationship when the incident occurred. Investigators said the encounter began as a verbal argument related to alleged infidelity.
Authorities allege the dispute escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Malone struck the woman multiple times in the face with a closed fist. The affidavit further states that Malone allegedly grabbed the woman by the throat and slammed her down numerous times.
Officers responding to the scene reported observing injuries consistent with the woman’s account, including apparent scratch marks on her neck, bruising to her knees, and bruising to her cheek. Investigators also noted a small scratch on the side of Malone’s nose. Police said the woman reported scratching Malone in the face in self-defense while attempting to escape.
According to officials, Malone was initially uncooperative during the investigation, repeatedly stating that the woman was intoxicated, needed assistance, and that he did not want her to get into trouble. After further discussion, Malone agreed to speak with officers and claimed the woman had attacked him and broken his necklace. Authorities noted that Malone did not explain how the woman sustained her injuries.
Investigators ultimately determined Malone to be the primary aggressor, citing the consistency between the woman’s statements and the injuries observed at the scene.
Malone was arrested and charged with aggravated assault involving strangulation. As of publication time, no additional information has been released regarding court proceedings or Malone’s employment status with the Collinsville Police Department.
The investigation remains ongoing.
