COLLINSVILLE, Ala. — A Collinsville man was taken into custody Monday night after authorities responded to reports of gunfire in the Tuckers Chapel community, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called to the area of County Road 361 near Welcome Hill Cemetery after receiving a report that a firearm had been discharged. Investigators identified the suspect as Dustin Highfield, 45, of Collinsville.
According to officials, the individual who contacted authorities reported witnessing Highfield firing a weapon. Investigators said the caller attempted to speak with Highfield, but the interaction escalated into a verbal dispute. The caller then left the area in their vehicle, with Highfield allegedly following behind.
Authorities stated that during that time, Highfield reportedly fired two rounds into the air.
When deputies arrived and began their investigation, they determined Highfield had been operating a vehicle while under the influence. Officials said Highfield was uncooperative with law enforcement and refused to comply when deputies attempted to place him into custody.
Highfield was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and resisting arrest. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
Sheriff’s officials said the investigation remains ongoing and that additional charges could be filed as the case develops.
