RAINBOW CITY, Ala. — A woman was injured and a man was found dead following an early morning shooting Tuesday at an apartment complex in Rainbow City, according to authorities.

Officers with the Rainbow City Police Department were dispatched to Rainbow Apartments on Doris Street around 5:30 a.m. after reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers found a woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was treated at the scene by emergency responders and airlifted to an area hospital, where she is reported to be in stable condition.

Inside the apartment, officers discovered a man deceased from what investigators believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was identified as 46-year-old Eddie Charles Ellis Jr. of Gadsden. Police determined the man and woman were in a relationship.

Authorities confirmed that two juveniles under the age of 16 were inside the residence at the time of the incident. Neither juvenile was injured.

Multiple agencies responded to assist at the scene, including the Jacksonville State University Center for Applied Forensic Science and the Etowah County District Attorney’s Office. Support services were also provided by the James M. Barrie Center for Children.

Ellis’s body is being transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details are expected to be released by Rainbow City police as they become available.
