Man Dies Following Farm Accident in McCord’s Crossroads Community

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ala. — A Cherokee County man died Sunday night following a farm accident in the McCord’s Crossroads community, according to information released by the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. on September 6, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a residence following a report of a missing person.

The missing man, identified as Barry Kerr, had reportedly been bushhogging with a skid steer and had not returned home.

The Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the McCord’s Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department, Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency and Cherokee County Rescue Squad. Family members, neighbors and first responders quickly organized a search using ATVs, drones and four-wheel-drive vehicles.

The Spring Garden Volunteer Fire Department also responded with its rescue ATV.

Shortly after the search began, the skid steer was located overturned in a body of water. Floyd EMS was dispatched as first responders at the scene immediately began efforts to reach and remove the operator.

The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office responded and worked alongside emergency personnel during the recovery operation. Kerr was pronounced deceased at the scene from injuries sustained in the incident.

“Our office is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death,” Cherokee County Coroner Paul McDonald stated. “We extend our deepest sympathy and prayers to the family and all those affected by this tragic loss.”

McCord’s Crossroads Fire Chief Rich Lindsey expressed appreciation for everyone who assisted with the search and response.

“We are grateful for the quick response and efforts of all the responding agencies, family members, and neighbors who came together to search for and assist the victim,” Lindsey said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.”

The incident remains under investigation by the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office.
