CENTRE, Ala. — The Cherokee County Public Library is inviting the community to bring their lunch and enjoy learning something new as its Brain Bites Lunch and Learn Series continues with two upcoming programs.
The free lunchtime series offers educational and entertaining presentations on a variety of topics while allowing community members to gather at the library. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch, while drinks and dessert will be provided by the library.
The next Brain Bites program, “Spies Like Us!”, will be held Thursday, Aug. 20, at noon and will feature a presentation with the Anniston Museum of Natural History.
The program will offer attendees an opportunity to explore the fascinating world of spies, secrecy and intelligence while enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of the library's lunchtime series.
September Program Explores Alabama History Through Quilting
The series will continue Thursday, Sept. 17, at noon with “The Mt. Ida Quilt Project: One Community, Two Quilts, Three Centuries,” presented by Sarah Bliss Wright.
The presentation introduces the Mallory and Welch families, who moved in 1834 to an area of Alabama that had recently been ceded by the Creek Indians.
Through their own words and family history, the presentation explores their cotton plantations, marriages, personal tragedies, and the effects of the Civil War on their lives.
The Mt. Ida Quilt Project also takes a more lighthearted look at the challenges of bringing together 12 busy 21st-century women with varying needlework skills and keeping everyone on task to complete a project designed to be both enjoyable and rewarding.
The September presentation is supported by a grant award from the Alabama Humanities Alliance.
Both Brain Bites programs will be held at the Cherokee County Public Library, 310 Mary Street in Centre.
For additional information, contact the library at 256-927-5838.
Community members looking for an educational way to spend their lunch hour are encouraged to bring a meal, stop by the library and take part in the upcoming Brain Bites programs.
