MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Marine Patrol Division is preparing for another season of its Boating Basics and Vessel Operator License Courses, offering free, in-person classes at locations across the state.
According to ALEA, the courses are designed to provide citizens with essential boating safety education while allowing participants to interact directly with local ALEA Troopers. The in-person format also allows for more hands-on instruction and region-specific guidance tailored to waterways frequently visited by residents.
Citizens who successfully complete the Boating Basics course will receive a certificate by mail after Troopers submit the participant’s information to the Agency’s Vessel Registration Unit. ALEA’s Driver License Division will then add the vessel class designation to the individual’s Alabama Driver's License.
Officials note that it may take up to 10 business days after course completion before participants can visit alabamadl.alea.gov or their nearest county probate office to obtain an updated Alabama Driver's License.
Children aged 12 and older are eligible to obtain a vessel operator’s license; however, they are not permitted to operate a vessel alone until the age of 14.
